In 2004, the World Health Organization held its first World Hepatitis Day campaign to disseminate knowledge about hepatitis C prevention, screening and treatment to the public, the medical community and government officials.

In 2010, in order to commemorate Baruch Samuel Blumberg, the discoverer of hepatitis B virus, the World Health Organization decided to designate July 28 as World Hepatitis Day from 2011.

It was suggested that there is a close relationship between Australian antigens and acute viral hepatitis, which may be transmitted by blood transfusion, thus winning the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1976.
